Perhaps you have never given a donation to charity before. Or you and your family may have been making donations for generations. Whatever your position, NPC can give you the advice you need to make sure your money is making the biggest impact.
There are several steps involved in the process of giving money more effectively, which are outlined in the diagram below. Some donors are looking for a complete service – from setting up their foundation, defining and learning about an issue, selecting and supporting charities and reviewing their funding. Others may seek help at only one stage in the process – such as selecting a suitable charity in their chosen area, or meeting other donors interested in the same issues.
Whether you want the complete solution or simply need support with a few issues along the way, NPC can help your donation make a difference. Here are some of the questions you should be asking:
The start of the giving process involves two steps. First you need to think through what you want to achieve with your giving. Second, you need to think about the correct vehicle, such as a trust or a charity account.
Your giving can become much more effective and rewarding if you focus on areas that match your personal interests. Donors find it helpful to learn as much as possible about a particular area of interest to help them to understand the level of need, and to make better funding decisions.
Once you’ve decided where to focus your giving, you need to choose specific charities to support. Then you need to work out the best ways of supporting them and make sure you get the appropriate feedback to measure the results.
You may have been giving money for many years, but perhaps you aren't satisfied with the results? Undertaking a thorough review of your funding – looking at your objectives, processes and grant history – can help you achieve more, in terms of personal and social impact.
'It was harder than we thought to give our money away. We were frightened of getting it wrong. Having someone who would make sure all the boxes were ticked was a huge relief.'
