Introduction

Your foundation may have existed for decades or you may want to start one from scratch. Whatever your position, NPC can help your foundation maximise the impact of its giving.

There are several steps involved in the philanthropy process, which are outlined in the diagram below. Some clients come to us looking for a complete service, from establishing a foundation to defining and learning about an issue, selecting and supporting charities and reviewing funding. Other foundations want support at only one stage in the process – including advice about co-funding with other foundations, insight on how to fund internationally, or a deeper understanding of an issue important to the foundation.

Getting started

If you're setting up a foundation from scratch, the first two steps will be clarifying the foundation’s objectives and working out the most suitable structure.

Maximising impact

Getting objective information about areas you want to support can be difficult. Greater impact can be achieved by focusing on specific areas combined with an understanding of need.

Making it happen

Once you’ve decided where to focus your giving, you need to choose specific charities to support, work out the best ways of supporting them and make sure you get the appropriate feedback to measure the results.

Reviewing your funding

The foundation may not be satisfied with the results of its giving. Undertaking a thorough review of its funding – looking at your objectives, processes and grant history – can help you achieve a higher social return.
