Making it happen

Once you’ve decided where the business should focus its giving, you need to choose specific charities to support, work out the best ways of supporting them and make sure you get the appropriate feedback to measure the results. Some of your considerations may include:

How do we find effective charities?

How can we avoid the paperwork associated with supporting multiple charities?

What questions should we ask on charity visits and how do we analyse grant proposals?

How and when do we stop funding a charity?

How can our staff help in other ways – for example, by volunteering?

How do we monitor the grants?

What kind of feedback should we expect from charities?

Business of giving

A company decided to outsource the majority of its grant-making to NPC. We identified charities within their focus area, with a variety of income, geography and risk profile, and undertook full due diligence on each of them. We then managed the entire funding process, which included drafting grant agreements, carrying out annual grant reporting and triggering release of grant instalments as well as organising and facilitating annual workshops for the grantee charities.

Charity insight

"75% of abused children tell no-one at the time. If they do, they have to tell three people on average before anything is done."

NSPCC's CHILDLINE is a helpline where children can discuss whatever is worrying them in confidence. It receives 4,500 calls per day; only 60% can be answered. there4me is NPSPCC's complementary online service. Both help children to report abuse.
