Getting started

The start of the giving process involves two steps. First you need to think through what your business wants to achieve with its giving. Second, you need to think about the correct vehicle for your business. Some of your considerations may include:

What issues should we focus on?

Should we focus on geographic areas aligned to our business or not?

Is there additional impact the business wants to achieve with its giving – such as staff retention, brand etc?

How do we engage or involve our staff – for example by matching their fundraising or providing volunteering opportunities?

Do we need a separate foundation?

Trading to give

A stockbroking firm that raises funds through an annual trading day came to NPC for advice on how and where to distribute those funds. They wanted to make an impact and reflect the company’s mission and culture. We persuaded them that the best way to achieve this was by supporting local charities across the UK, rather than one national charity as they had originally planned. Five years on the staff are really enthusiastic about the impact the company has achieved with its giving. 88% of staff think their giving is better than that of its competitors.
