Publications
NPC's publications are seen as must-read resources for policy makers, funders, charities and individual donors. Reports launched in 2010 include:
Trusteeship 2010: An update for charity trustees
In Trusteeship 2010, we look at what has changed for charity trustees in the UK over the last year. The report provides a mixture of news and views, updating our review of trusteeship, Board matters, published in May 2009.
New facilities, new funding: A proposed financing model from Scope
This paper explores how charities can use loans and social investment successfully to finance capital projects. It is the result of a project NPC carried out for the disability charity Scope, exploring the potential benefits and challenges of a financing model developed by the charity.
NPC perspectives: Scaling up for the Big Society
In this paper, we argue that charities and social enterprises do indeed have an important role to play in building a Big Society. But two things stand in the way: an inability to provide evidence of their impact and the challenge of identifying proven, cost-effective approaches and organisations that can be scaled up to meet the challenge. Scaling up for the Big Society seeks to address this by suggesting ways to assess evidence of impact and social benefit and providing guidance on what to scale up and how to do it.
SROI position paper
As a leading voice in the field of charity effectiveness, NPC has been asked several times for its perspective on SROI , which is why we have written this position paper. The paper sets out our position on how and when SROI is most useful, based on our experience of working with charities and on our understanding of SROI in principle and practice. It discusses what NPC sees as the defining characteristics of SROI and seeks to clarify and set straight some common misunderstandings.
Well-informed: Charities and commissioners on results reporting, A National Performance Programme report for charities, funders and support providers
Well-informed presents findings about how charities communicate results information to commissioners, and how commissioners use this information. It also looks at the financial and non-financial support charities receive for monitoring and evaluation.
The little blue book: NPC’s guide to analysing charities, for charities and funders
The little blue book is NPC's concise and practical guide to analysing charities, for charities and funders. The guide contains examples of how charities and funders benefit from analysis, and explains NPC’s charity analysis framework, which looks at how charities can assess their effectiveness in six areas. It also contains a grading grid, which can be used to describe a charity’s effectiveness on each part of the framework.
