A wise man's decision

Are you choosing this year's Christmas cards? You might want to take a look at some on sale from NPC recommended charities.

Buying directly from these organisations, which have been analysed by NPC, is a good way to ensure that your donation will be going to an effective and well-run charity. Like other charities recommended by NPC, they have been assessed on their achievements, their need for additional funding, their accounts and fundraising potential, and on any risks the organisation may face to ensure that the best charities receive the funding they deserve.

Nigel Harris, Chief Executive of NPC highlights the importance of choosing carefully the charities you support. He says, ‘buying Christmas cards is no different from any other charitable donation in that you want to ensure your money is going to an effective charity’. He adds, ‘by supporting charities that NPC has researched and evaluated, donors can rest assured that their money is being put to good use.’

An important point to remember when buying your cards is that where you buy from can have a huge impact on the amount of money that actually reaches a charity. Research from the Charities Advisory Trust states that, on average, only 8 pence of every pound from charity cards sold in High Street stores goes to the charity itself. Card Aid is a website which aims to change this. They look to ensure that 100% of profits go to the charities themselves. Some of the projects Card Aid have supported so far include funding research into cancer and setting up a skills workshop in a young offenders institute.
