A new way to stop disruption in schools

30 December 2008 – The Times

A report by New Philanthropy Capital claims that “One in ten young people in the UK is affected by mental health disorders and 80 per cent of children showing behavioural problems at 5 go on to develop more serious forms of antisocial behaviour.”  According to Penny Wark of The Times, however,  while “Disruptive pupils make school life difficult for everyone…early intervention and support can effect real change.”

There will be “funding shortages ahead” in the recession, while demand for aid will be rising.  Therefore, “organisations seeking grants [will] need to adapt, so too may funders, working with each other and through intermediaries such as the UK’s New Philanthropy Capital to identify the best recipients.”

Care gaps affect mentally ill children

3 December 2008 – Guardian Society

According to Heads Up, a report by New Philanthropy Capital, “the charity sector for children and young people with mental health problems is ‘small and under-resourced’ relative to the scale of the problem and…40% of those with a mental disorder do not get any treatment.”  The research nevertheless found that “there were opportunities ‘to make a real difference’.”

Behaviour disorder ‘costing £1.5bn’

“A severe psychiatric disorder in children and young people costs society as much as £1.5 billion every year owing to a lack of available treatment”, according to a report published by New Philanthropy Capital.  However, “cost savings of £244 million to £376 million could be achieved by reaching out to all children and adolescents with conduct disorder.”

“Wealthy people will continue to use philanthropy services despite the current economic environment, according to a survey of European wealth advisers.”  However, the report by the Scorpio Partnership concludes that, “advisers are not currently meeting the needs of their clients.”

Homeless charity gains national praise

A regional homelessness charity has received a ringing endorsement from a national organisation that advises major donors on giving funds.  Newcastle-based Tyneside Cyrenians was recommended by New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) in a report that examines the causes of homelessness.

Should the offspring of Warren Buffett ever challenge his decision to give £15bn of their potential inheritance to charity – he has an answer ready. “I think that a rich person should leave their children so they can do anything, but not enough that they can do nothing”.  Sue Wixley from NPC says that this is a reflection of changes in how fortunes are amassed.

Harvey McGrath, a founding NPC trustee, appeared in the FT’s 'How to give it' column.  He talks about his reasons for supporting NPC; “many of us do not have the resources to properly evaluate charitable effectiveness…This charity brings a research-based approach to helping donors find effective charities and helps them structure their giving accordingly.”
