Big ideas

  • NPC's well-being project: Charities often struggle to measure the 'softer' outcomes of their work, such as the effect they have on people's self esteem or well-being. To help with this, NPC has developed a tool for organisations to demonstrate their impact on the well-being of young people aged 11 to 16. The tool provides organisations with a simple, reliable and academically-robust way of understanding the difference they make to young people’s lives.

NPC has also initiated two special projects, alongside its consultancy and think tank activities, aimed at building infrastructure within the charity and philanthropy sector. Both projects aim to promote the flow of information and exchange of best practice. This is a vital part of creating a more effective marketplace and key to NPC's vision.

  • The Social Impact Analyst Association: this is a membership body for individuals and organisations dedicated to the analysis of nonprofits. NPC, together with the Bertelsmann foundation, are currently working to lay the groundwork for such an Association, following the Valuing Impact conference, which we jointly convened in London in May 2009.

  • A steering group of professional advisors: consisting of a range of advisors from the private client industry and the charity sector, this committee will help to facilitate the sharing of information and knowledge and to build a 'community of practice' amongst individuals involved in providing philanthropy advice.

‘How do you measure the “viability” of a charitable investment? New Philanthropy Capital (NPC), a British charity devoted to measuring effectiveness of donations to good causes, looks for high returns “in terms of the benefits to the people the charity is trying to help”’.
